Our first day of the family trip was wonderful. The energy that comes with arriving in Israel hides jet lag very well! We went from the airport to Latrun to learn about the IDF's tank division, reminding us of the sacrifices that are continually made to ensure Israel's safety and existence. From there, we began our ascent to Jerusalem, first with a stop for lunch (kosher McDonald's, falafel, pizza, and of course, coffee).
To arrive in Jerusalem and stand on the tayelet, the Haas Promenade overlooking Jerusalem, never gets old. Most of our family trip participants are first time visitors to Israel, and many others have not been since their teenage years. Yet, even from a staff perspective, to stand there and look over this sacred place continues to be special. We blessed the moment and then took time to rest. Dinner and opportunities for socializing gave us a good introduction to what is ahead.
For me (Rabbi Lapidus), I love watching each family discover their connection to Israel. This trip is about learning our story and discovering a love of Israel, and for parents, it is also about fulfilling the mitzvah to "teach them to your children"--to offer their children the opportunity to connect to Israel and Judaism in this amazing way. It is also about community--one participant remarked, "I can't believe how many people are on this trip who I don't know yet!" How wonderful to have the chance to make new connections that can be brought back home.
